How many Wheat Roti you eat in a day?

Posted by Ft. Arnab Guha 03/05/2022 0 Comment(s) Diseases - Gut Related,

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition triggered by the ingestion of gluten, the protein fraction of wheat, barley and rye.

It is not simply an intestinal disease; it is multifactorial caused by many different genetic factors acting together with non-genetic causes.

The villi line the small intestine, and help absorb and carry nutrients to the body. In people with celiac disease, the villi are damaged, increasing the risk of malnutrition.

If you are eating 4-8 wheat rotis in one meal and still feel hungry, then rest assured you are heading towards celiac disease and you need to consult your doctor immediately.

I have seen some of my relatives eating 6-7 wheat rotis in a dinner and still not getting the satiety.

And BTW, Celiac Disease has 250+ symptoms, associated with 100+ diseases in human body and usually, it is not the first line of diagnosis by a doctor.

The signs and symptoms of celiac disease can vary greatly and differ in children and adults.

Patients with celiac disease have an increased risk of developing certain kinds of cancers.

The risk appears to lessen for some cancers after five years on a strict, nutriotious well-balanced gluten-free diet.
  • Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (intestinal and extra-intestinal, T- and B-cell types)
  • Small Intestinal Adenocarcinoma
  • Esophageal Carcinoma
  • Papillary Thyroid Cancer
  • Melanoma

Mechanistic studies in experimental models as well as multicenter observational cohort studies, conducted not only in Western and/or westernized countries, would help to build in more evidences w.r.t association between celiac disease and cancer. All this will require huge funding of clinical studies like the amount of funding/spending we have seen in the current COVID-19 pandemic globally.

Lastly, I would like to end on a philosophical note for general public in hindi - ‘Aakh baand karne se. ya yeh post ko ignore karne se hakikat nahin badal jayegi’
